The Salvation Army has a long and distinguished history of ministering to individuals and families who come from the most disadvantaged corners of society including those who have been most discriminated against and undervalued in our society.
The Salvation Army was founded 137 years ago in England and has served Pennsylvania and Delaware for 122 years. Throughout this time, we have taken a holistic approach to our work with people, addressing their spiritual, emotional, educational and material needs.

Perhaps the best known component of The Salvation Army is the Corps Community Center that serves both as a community center and as a house of worship. Services typically include emergency food and financial assistance, Christmas gifts and holiday food, soup kitchens, child day care, after-school, summer camp, music instruction, sports and recreation activities for all ages, adult education, and senior citizen programming, social work, worship, and spiritual counseling. Services are provided to all without regard to race or religious faith. The Developmental Disabilities Program has found that the corps community centers provide a multitude of opportunities for our individuals to volunteer both at these community centers and, through contacts made at the corps, other community-based non-profit agencies.

In addition to the corps community centers, The Salvation Army has a long history of operating many individualized social service programs depending on the need of the community. For example, we operate emergency shelter and transitional housing for homeless persons, foster care services for children, senior citizen day and residential programs, and HIV/AIDS in-home support. The Salvation Army also works with incarcerated women and their families and individuals suffering from substance abuse problems.

The Developmental Disabilities Program (DDP) was established in 1980 to empower persons with disabilities to choose where they live and work, and to live in an environment of dignity and respect. The Developmental Disabilities Program currently provides residential and employment supports in eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. Community integrated day services are also provided for individuals who may not be capable or interested in sustaining competitive employment. All activities and programs are designed to build on individual interests and strengths.
